Justice Abdullah Mikalilu on Monday ordered the police in Banjul, The Gambian capital to arrest Benedict Jammeh, a former Director General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDEA.

The High Court issuance of an arrest warrant against the embattled former State Agent followed his conspicuous absence in Monday’s hearing in a trial he is involved.

Also,  the judge also ordered for the arrest of Jammeh’s sureties if he fails to show up on May, 15, 2013.

On 13 May, 2013, the judge said Jammeh must be brought to tell the Court the reason of his absence. He facing multiple charges and is currently on bail for D5 million.

Jammeh together with Abdoulie Ceesay, a former spokesperson, Yuspha Jatta, Commissioner of West Coast Region and Foday Barry, an ex-Director of Investigation and Intelligence – all of the NDEA are standing trial on 90 counts of which includes “economic crime”, “false information” and related offences.

They have since pleaded “not guilty” to all charges brought against them by the State.

Ben Jammeh’s co-accused persons were in Court on Monday. Lawyer Badou S. Conteh applied for a short adjournment to enable the defence find out about Benedict Jammeh’s whereabouts.

The Director of Public Prosecution Saleh Barkun objected to Conteh’s application. He argued “there is no valid reason why the accused is not in court”.
