Gambia: Women’s Rights Activist Launches Candidacy For Presidency

A women's rights activist will today officially announce her candidacy for President of The Gambia in a ceremony holding at a local hotel in Kololi, a resort town situated 18 kilometers west of the Gambian capital, Banjul.

The Executive Director of of the Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children, GAMCOTRAP, is her first countrywoman to declare her intention to stand for president.

In 2014, on International Women's Day, she was named among the world's 'Bravest Women'. She spent more than 30 years campaigning against female genital mutilation (FGM), and according to this post "because of her work, she has been constantly threatened by the authorities, falsely charged and imprisoned."

FGM has been outlawed in The Gambia since last 2015.
