Gambian journalist Alagie Jobe on Tuesday maintained his “not guilty plea” when he first appeared before the High Court in Banjul, the capital – where his was mentioned on May 14, 2013.
Previously presided over by the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, the trial against the Deputy Editor-In-Chief of the Daily Observer and his co-accused Mbye Bittaye, an employee of the mobile telephnoy company, Africell, was transferred to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court last week.
Again, Mr Jobe pleaded not guilty on five counts of “Making an act with a seditious intention”, “seditious publication”, “possession of seditious publication”, “false information”, and “reckless and neglect acts”.
Mr Bittaye also denied a modified charge of “making preparation to do act with seditious intention”. Previously, he had denied “making unlawful inquiries relating to possibility of forgery”.
Prosecutor AM Yusuf applied for a short adjournment to enable him start the case. However, Jobe’s Counsel, Ebrima Jah, said he will make a “formal application” in support of bail for Mr Jobe.
Mr Jobe has been in the custody of the State since his arrest in February 2013.
Bittaye’s Counsel Seega Gaye reminded the Court that his client has been previously granted bail by the High Court.
Justice Emmanuel Nkea, presiding, said he is extending Bittaye’s bail condition – which was a bond of D500, 000.
He scheduled hearing to continue on 23, 27, and 28 May, 2013.
